How to Get the Most from Your Woodwick Candle: A Complete Candle Care Guide

There's something deeply satisfying about lighting a Woodwick candle. The soft crackle of the wooden wick, the slow unfurl of fragrance, the warm glow settling into a room — it's a ritual worth protecting.
To make sure every candle burns beautifully from first light to last, here's everything you need to know about candle care.
The First Burn Is Everything
The most important burn is the very first one. Always allow your candle to burn until the entire surface has melted into a full melt pool — this usually takes 2–3 hours for a standard jar candle.
Skipping this step causes "tunnelling," where the wax burns straight down the centre, wasting fragrance and shortening the life of your candle significantly.
Tip: Never light a new candle if you only have 30 minutes to spare.
Trim Your Wooden Wick Before Every Burn
Wooden wicks need a little more attention than cotton ones. Before each burn, trim the wick to around 3–4mm. A wick that's too long can produce excess smoke, a large flame, or even cause the candle to extinguish itself.
Use a wick trimmer or small scissors, and always remove any charred debris from the wax before relighting.
Keep Burns to 3–4 Hours Maximum
Burning a candle for too long causes the wick to "mushroom," the wax to overheat, and the fragrance to dissipate faster than intended. Aim for 3–4 hour burn sessions for the best scent throw and longevity.
Store Your Candle Properly
When not in use, keep the lid on — especially important for our cork-lidded candles, which help preserve the fragrance oils and protect the wax from dust. Store away from direct sunlight and heat sources, which can cause discolouration and scent loss.
Know When to Stop
Stop burning your candle when around 1cm of wax remains at the bottom. Burning beyond this point can overheat the glass jar and become a safety risk. Once finished, the jar can be cleaned out and repurposed — our green glass jars make beautiful small planters or storage pots.
A Note on Wooden Wicks
If your Woodwick candle won't stay lit, the wick may be too long or have too much char. Trim it back, remove any debris, and try again. Wooden wicks sometimes need a slightly longer initial flame to catch — hold the lighter to the base of the wick for a few seconds rather than the tip.
